Helping you decide on your next meal..
So you might have noticed a lack of posts by me recently... (I've been lazy AF!) but I have eaten at some pretty awesome restaurants recently so a new blog post is well overdue. Last week Josh and I ate out at our favourite Chinese restaurant in Sheffield called Hui Wei (located on Glossop Road - you can find out all about it here). We were uber excited to go with our good friends The Kerr's as this is the restaurant they had their first date at - cue AHHHHHHHHH's - and they are now married so I like to think the food at Hui Wei had something to do with this (probably). From the outside, Hui Wei is very unassuming (it actually shares a doorway with another restaurant next to it) and I can't say I have ever seen it advertised in Sheffield or heard about it from other people. However, when you enter the restaurant it is not decked out like your typical Chinese restaurant. I would say it looks more sophisticated than expected and the lighting is quite appealing (soft but not dark so you can barely see what you are eating/looking at *cough* Hollister *cough*). This adds to a pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant and when we are shown to where our friends are waiting the seating is also good as the majority of seating is separated into individual booths which feels more intimate. I was staaaarving so couldn't wait to order some yummy food - I took the opportunity whilst everyone was talking to focus on trying to decide what I wanted from the menu (like most Chinese restaurants the menu is quite large so for me this makes trying to decide on what dishes to order a nightmare as I want to EAT IT ALL!!!) In the end we decided to share a few dishes so went for: the Vegetarian Platter for 4 (A combination of Spring Rolls, Vegetable Satay Skewers, Wontons and Crispy Tofu in Garlic & Chilli), Ginger and Spring Onion Pork, Sweet & Sour Crispy Chicken, House Special Crispy Fried Noodles and Steamed Rice. Don't you just love fried, beige food? YUM. A revelation to me was the deep fried Tofu with cashews - super delicious and surprisingly full of flavour. Everything in the platter that was deep fried was crisp and I must remember to douse my vegetables in satay sauce in the future as it makes them much more bearable!! Then we were served our mains... I generally find sweet and sour sauce can be quite vinegary tasting but have never found this with Hui Wei's version on their crispy chicken. It is very sweet though so may not be to everyone's taste. The ginger and spring onion pork was really savoury and a nice contrast to the sweet and sour chicken but Josh and I were not such a fan of the house crispy noodles - we found them to be a bit 'slimey' (THAT WORD!!!) and found the taste a bit bland. Other than that though it was a really enjoyable meal and the menu is so vast that we will be returning many times I expect in the future to eat our way through it.
My next blog post will be about our recent visit to Chester and a gorgeous Greek restaurant we visited whilst there. OOOOPA! CS xx
